JoyceIsCrafty Crochet Butterfly Pattern

Use whatever size hook you’re comfortable with.  Use whatever kind of yarn or thread you like.  By playing with different sizes of hooks and yarn, you’ll come up with different sizes of butterflies.

I prefer a Susan Bates size B hook and size 10 cotton thread.
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sl – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
Ch 5, sl to form ring.
Round 1 will be worked in the center of this ring.
Round 1:
Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc) 2 dc in ring; *ch 2 3 dc in ring*.  Repeat between * * until you have 8 sets of  (3dc).  Hdc in top of ch 3 to join.
Round 2:
Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc) 2 dc in the space you just made from the hdc, ch 3, 3 dc in same space *3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in next ch 2 sp (shell made)*.  Repeat between * *  until you have 8 sets of shells (3dc ch3 3dc).  Sl in top of ch 3 to join.
Round 3:
Ch 1, sc in space you just made between the shells.  10 dc in each ch 3 and sc in the space between each shell.  Fold butterfly in half.  Sl in 1st sc to join.  Fasten off.
Make antennae with yarn, thread, wire, or beads.
